The first day of Road Safety Week is also World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. RoadPeace, the national charity for road crash victims, initially called for this day to be commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year, and it has since grown into a global awareness day, providing a space to remember those whose lives have been forever changed by road traffic collisions.
The theme for this year’s Road Safety Week campaign is "After the Crash - Every road victim counts". Brake's aim is to put road victims at the heart of Road Safety Week by raising awareness of the life-changing impact of road crashes, whilst also celebrating the important work of those who come together to support those affected.
We will be sharing content throughout this week, including podcasts with Lucy Straker, Campaigns Manager at Brake, Chief Superintendent Hilary Sloan, Head of Road Policing at Police Scotland and Nicola Edgar, Partner in MFMac's Pursuer Personal Injury Team. We will also be sharing case studies highlighting our clients' stories. We hope this content will provide an insight into the impact road traffic collisions have on families, along with the valuable work being done to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries, and the support being provided to those impacted.
Every year, over 1,700 people die on roads in the UK, which is the equivalent to five people per day. Over 30,000 more suffering serious life-altering injuries. With no significant reduction in these figures over the last decade, we are supporting Brake in highlighting that behind every road traffic statistic, there is a family whose life has been forever changed, either due to their loved one being killed or seriously injured. Brake's ultimate goal is to eliminate road traffic collisions through education and campaigning for change. This year, coinciding with Road Safety Week, Brake is launching a Road Victims' Charter, which seeks sustainable funding and parity of care for victims and their families, regardless of the circumstances of the road traffic collision.
MFMac is proud to be on Brake's Scottish legal panel and support their aim of providing the best care after a crash by advising individuals of their rights to make a claim for compensation and assisting them throughout the legal process.
