A summer placement will provide invaluable experience, allowing you to choose a firm which is right for you and prepare you for your forthcoming traineeship.

Working with us during the summer will offer you the opportunity to participate in work-based learning in one of our practice areas and gain valuable experience of life in the legal profession.

We offer students a paid three-week placement in one of our offices, with an aim to provide you with an insight into the firm and our culture. You can expect to get involved in a variety of work including, for example, carrying out research and shadowing trainees.

To be considered for a placement, you need to be in at least your third year of a Scots Law Degree or first year of the accelerated LLB and be available on the key dates outlined below.

We are committed to delivering a collaborative and inclusive culture that supports our people to do their best work every day.

Application Process

Stage One: Application Form & Video Interview Question

You will be asked to provide personal details, academic results and answers to questions which will give you an opportunity to tell us more about what who you are and what you are looking to achieve from your summer placement.

After you complete the written part of the application form, you will be required to answer a video interview question. Your application will not be considered complete until you have answered the video question.

We use a contextual recruitment system (RARE) to help identify high-achieving individuals who may have missed our shortlist cut-off. This tool measures those who have performed well despite social disadvantage, which allows us to compare candidates more effectively. Within the application form, you will be asked for details such as eligibility for free school meals, if you are a refugee or the first generation of your family to go to university etc. Please complete this information accurately, and be assured that it will be kept confidential.

You will be informed by Thursday 30 January if you have been shortlisted to attend an Assessment Day. Due to the volume of applications that we receive, we regret that we cannot provide individual feedback after this stage.

Stage Two: Assessment Day

Applicants who are shortlisted following stage one will be invited to attend an assessment day in either our Edinburgh or Glasgow office. This assessment will take around an hour and a half. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

This will involve an interview with a Legal Director or Senior Associate and a member of MFMac's People Team. The interview will follow a set format with questions designed to find out more about your career motivations, knowledge of our firm, your personal strengths and competencies etc.

You will then take part in a short-written exercise. This exercise is designed to test your ability to quickly identify key issues and communicate professionally in a written format.

Following this stage, successful candidates will receive an offer for a summer placement commencing in June 2025. If you are unsuccessful, feedback will be provided. You should hear back by Wednesday 12 February.
